Booking Direct vs Airbnb and Vrbo: An Honest Comparison

“Is it safe to book direct?” is the question behind most hesitation, and it’s a fair one. So here’s a straight comparison rather than a sales pitch.

Price. Platforms add a guest service fee at checkout — typically a meaningful percentage of the total — and take a commission from the host, which inevitably shapes the nightly rate. Direct booking removes both layers. On a week’s stay, the difference is usually the cost of a very good dinner or a round of golf. Sometimes both.

Who you’re dealing with. On a platform, you’re a booking reference inside a system. Direct, you’re dealing with the owners of the property, by phone or email, from enquiry through to checkout. If you want to know how steep the driveway is or whether the sofa bed is any good, you’ll get a real answer.

Support when it matters. Platforms offer a support line, but it sits between you and the host and works on its own timescale. Our 24/7 guest line goes to us. Something breaks at 9pm, we know about it at 9pm.

Flexibility. Platform cancellation policies are standardised and rigid by design. Booking direct, our terms are published clearly up front — and when life genuinely happens, there’s a human being to talk to rather than a policy code.

Extras and personalisation. This is the biggest practical gap. Pre-arrival grocery stocking, private chef dining, tee times, restaurant reservations, transfers, mid-stay cleans, late checkout where available. That kind of thing simply doesn’t fit through a platform’s messaging system.

Trust and reviews. This is where platforms have genuinely earned their place — the review system is public and hard to game. So read them. Find us on the platforms, read what previous guests said, then come and book direct. We’d rather you did the homework than took our word for it.

What you should always check before booking any direct site: a real business address and phone number, clear terms and conditions, secure payment, and a named person behind it. The short version. Platforms are a discovery tool and they’re good at it. But once you’ve found a home you like, booking direct is cheaper for you, better for the property, and more personal for everyone involved.
