“Owner-run” is easy to write on a website. It is worth asking what it actually means once you have booked, because that is the only place it shows up.
Here is ours, in the plainest terms we can manage.
We fix things instead of explaining them
A guest at the beach condo did not like the canopy. So we bought a new one. Then we told them we had replaced it, and why.
It is a small example, but that’s really the point. Something wasn’t right, and the answer was a new canopy rather than a paragraph about why the old one was fine.
The details are decided before you ask
Most of what makes a house feel like a home away from home is settled long before anyone arrives.
- More than one coffee option in the kitchen, because a family of nine does not all drink the same coffee.
- Extra blankets in every room.
- Aveda products in the bathrooms.
- A flat parking area and easy access to the beach, which matters more than it sounds when there are grandparents and a stroller in the same group.
None of those are expensive. They are just the kind of thing you only think of if you have watched families arrive, unpack and settle in, over and over.
The local knowledge that makes a difference
Birdie Beach Bungalow sits at Cinnamon Beach in Palm Coast — three bedrooms, two baths, up to nine guests, with resort pools, golf, a fitness centre and a splash pad. That much a listing can tell you.
What is harder to capture on a listing is which restaurant is worth the drive on a Tuesday, or that there is a pierogi shop in Flagler Beach that appears on nobody’s top-ten list and is exactly right on a cool evening. Tell us who is coming and what you like, and we will point you at the version of the week your family will actually enjoy.
Small on purpose
We run two homes. We could run more, and we would rather not, because then somebody else would be answering your messages and deciding what “looked after” means.
The people answering your questions are the same people who chose the blankets, replaced the canopy and know the parking. That’s what owner-run means to us.
