Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg: What to Do in the Smokies

Sevierville is the sensible base. It sits just north of the noise, which means you get Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg on your doorstep without having to sleep in the middle of them. Twenty minutes in one direction is a rollercoaster; twenty in the other is a silent trail beside a river.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the reason most people come, and it deserves more than one day. The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a slow, beautiful loop that suits everybody. Laurel Falls is the classic family hike — paved, popular, and genuinely lovely if you go early. Cades Cove is an eleven-mile one-way loop through open valley where black bear, deer and wild turkey sightings are common; go at first light or on a vehicle-free morning if you can. Clingmans Dome puts you at the highest point in Tennessee.

Dollywood is minutes away in Pigeon Forge and is, honestly, one of the best-run theme parks in America — proper Appalachian craft and music alongside serious rollercoasters. Splash Country next door handles the hot months.

Gatlinburg is the walkable one. Park up and stay out: the SkyLift Park and SkyBridge, the aquarium, the Arts & Crafts Community loop for real makers rather than souvenir tat, and Ober Gatlinburg up the mountain for skiing in winter and the tram year-round.

Pigeon Forge is where the go-karts, dinner shows and mini-golf live. Lean into it or drive straight past it — both are valid holidays.

For a slower day, the Little Pigeon River is right there for tubing and fly fishing, and Sevierville’s own downtown is small, walkable and refreshingly free of queues.

And when it rains — and in the Smokies, it will — you want somewhere worth staying in. That was the whole idea behind The Bruin Den: a stone fireplace, a private hot tub on the deck, and a loft with a Multicade arcade and a convertible bumper-pool table. A wet afternoon stops being a problem.
